What did you enjoy most about Student Government?

I always thought of Student Government as the student nexus of campus–where all the student leaders from different organizations and areas of the 40 Acres come together to debate issues, solve problems, and serve the student body.

How did Student Government benefit you, as a student, and a leader in today’s world?

SG provides amazing opportunities for leadership development. As the official voice of a student body as diverse and complex as UT’s, SG teaches you how to understand difficult issues, solve different types of problems, and engage people with varying perspectives. It is more like a small city than a university, and the UT administration really cares about what students think and want to work with students to make the University a better place.

What advice would you give to a student considering SG?

Get involved and do whatever you are passoinate about! SG is a great place to bring an idea, win support for it, and execute it. You will form incredible friendships through Student Government (I met my wife in SG!), and you’ll meet people from all over campus. Just get involved in whatever you are interested in–if you don’t remain in SG throughout your time on campus, I have no doubt it will be SG that helps you find the area of campus you want to get involved in.

What was one of your most memorable experience during your time at The University of Texas?

In addition to Student Government, I was involved in the Texas Cowboys. During my senior year, I was elected to the Cannon Crew so actually got the opportunity to stand on the field during home games and fire “Smokey” every time we scored. Being a part of such a historic tradition is something I will never forget.
